Quain (Tianrang Bu) is a first year Ph.D. student in linguistics, focusing on phonology and historical linguistics. He is particularly interested in studying the synchronic and diachronic phonological phenomena of Chinese languages as a family, including devoicing, palatalization, lenition/fortition, chain shifts, free variation, lexical diffusion and tone sandhi. Currently just entering into the program, he is eager to explore other potential research interests as well. He holds a B.A. degree from Oberlin College in Anthropology and Comparative Literature with a Linguistics concentration.
