Cherry is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, where she has conducted fieldwork with speakers on the Ojibwe language. In her dissertation research, she provides an account of the Ojibwe noun classification systems of gender and classifiers, which are rare in a single language. She has previously worked on word order, information structure and discontinuous constituents.
